It was one of those days where everything seemed a bit too normal, wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to school, sit in class… nothing had happened this day. Matt had been taking notes like he always did, he paid attention because he wanted to do well at school, but today it was hard to concentrate because it was so boring.
He was at least glad it was the last class for today, he was less happy about having to be home alone again since his dad was working all day. Since his parents divorce things had went downhill for him and his dad, it was obvious that neither was too happy about how things were going right now.
Finally! The bell rang, so Matt picked up his books and headed out of the classroom, he didn’t need to bring them home so he would just put them in his locker. He walked in silence, most of the others didn’t bother putting their books in the locker so they just went right for the doors and wanted to leave as quickly as possible.

School was....interesting for Kai Starshine, to say the least. The other children shunned the disabled kid and the teachers didn’t seem to like him much, or if they did they didn’t show it. His scribes seemed to be the only ones who actually liked him and spoke to him. However, Kai wanted more out of life. He wanted to feel loved by people other than his immediate family who actually loved him for who he is. His Aunt seemed to love him but it was kind of weird how she showed it.
Kai was glad when the last lesson came. He’d be home with the family come seven pm. His parents worked until six so Kai usually waited around and read until either one picked him up. Once the last lesson was over, Kai was reminded what homework he needed to do for the new by his scribe, which was good. He sometimes forgot and left it til the last minute. Thankfully he didn't do that all the time. The black-haired boy was then allowed to go outside so packed his books and put them in his bag, which was strapped behind his k-walker and bade his scribe farewell until the next day. He walked out the classroom and gasped. The hallway was packed with school kids. He’d have to wade through the impenetrable sea of children.
He managed to get to his locker and was about to put a book in his locker when it slipped and fell to the floor. Great – now he was going to have to try to pick it up, which meant he’d have to either bend down or go completely on the floor. He didn’t want to do that. He looked round for help and then bent down but fell and banged his head on the bottom locker.

Matt found his locker as he heard something, he turned around just in time to see a guy falling, it looked like he hit his head! It looked painful, he looked around to see if anyone else would help him, but people had started disappearing and didn’t seem like the few who was left noticed or cared. Matt shook his head and walked quickly over to the guy “hey, are you alright?“ he wasn’t sure about how to do this, but he had to help, he couldn’t just leave him like this.
He was a bit worried “Ill help you get back up” he felt weird, this was a situation he had never been in before and it was impossible to act cool like he usually did, even if he tried. “Just put your arms over my shoulders okay?” he said and pulled the boy up, if someone walked by they would probably think they were hugging, how awkward.
Then he got him back to the walker, he let him go when he was sure he was safe. Then he picked up the book “you should be careful, you could have gotten hurt pretty bad” he gave him the book “find someone to do it for you next time, there is no shame in asking for help” he started thinking about leaving now, he was not a big talker so he felt it would just get awkward if he stayed here, but he didn’t want to leave until he knew the guy was fine.

Gah, he was so stupid! He shouldn’t have tried to pick the book up. He was thankful for the blonde-haired guy for picking him up and handing the book over. Kai put the book in his bag strapped to the right handle bar, which he had dubbed the side bag. He smiled to the guy in appreciation. This guy looked familiar. Was he in one of Kai’s classes? He didn’t think so – he would have seen him otherwise. Then Kai Starshine realised that this guy was a year younger than him. Kai believed that this guy’s name was Matt Ishida. The disabled half-Japanese kid was thankful for the help.
“Thanks for the help. My helpers usually leave for the staff room at the end of the day, I'm ok on my own, it’s just today that I fell. I'm Kai Starshine. You can call me Kai or Gin, either is fine,” said Kai. “What do they call you?”
Kids were chattering away in the hallways still. Kai always had to weave through the crowd of kids at this time of the day, which got annoying at times. Kai shut his locker door and put both hands on the handles so he was more stable. He thought about how the other kids didn’t have the faintest idea of Kai’s life. They were lucky that they could walk all the time whereas he needed a wheelchair to get around for when he got tired. Some of the kids started going out of school, to walk home or go on the bus or train or get rides from their parents. Meanwhile, Kai would either go read somewhere or talk to this guy. He needed some friends.

“I’m Matt Ishida” he said and looked at his watch, he wondered if they left Kai on his own like this every day? That wasn’t very responsible was it? “Are your parents picking you up or are you taking the bus?” he kind of wanted to leave and go home, but he felt like he couldn’t leave Kai on his own, he understood that he wasn’t helpless and could manage on his own, but he felt a bit unsure about this especially since he saw him fall.
On the other hand, Matt didn’t have to be home right away since his dad was working late anyway, he just had to be home in time to cook dinner. His plans for today had been go home, do homework, play some on his guitar or harmonica and then just watch TV until he had to start making dinner, it was not like he had anything important to do “if you want, I could stay here until your parents pick you up, I don’t have anything better to do”.
He had seen Kai many times before, like everyone else you do notice the disabled kid, without really noticing them in a way? He had never thought about talking to him before for some reason, well not that Matt usualy did talk to anyone he didn’t already know at all anyway. But he had noticed that Kai looked lonely before, without really thinking about it.

The blonde guy confirmed Kai’s suspicions on what his name was when he said he was Matt Ishida. “Oh, they’re picking me up but they pick me up later though,” said Kai to the blonde guy’s first question. He smiled to him afterwards, just to let him know that he was ok about it. His parents always picked him up later on than other parents did, and Sora always seemed to go home earlier than him, which was a shame. He’d only recently met the girl but they were fast-growing friends. Maybe this Matt would be friend also. It would be nice to have friends – like, proper real friends. He didn’t have any and he viewed his mother’s students more as acquaintances than friends. He couldn’t say why, though – it was just a feeling.
When Matt asked if Kai wanted him to stay, he smiled. No one bar his parents, his sister, Miranda and a few others were this nice to him. Tristan also was nice to him, to a degree, even if he did want to spend most of his time with his friends. “I’d like that, but only if you’re sure. I don’t want you to feel obligated to stay.” Kai looked around and saw that a lot of students had gone but some were still around. He knew they’d go soon – he was always almost the last student to leave the school premises. His face obtained the briefest look of sadness and loneliness before resuming back to its usual cheery expression. “Hey, do you know a Sora Takenouchi? it’s just that...I’m friends with her and thought you might know her.”
Kai decided that walking would be a good idea and so nodded to Matt to follow him. Over the years he’d been working on trying to get his leg muscles strengthened and was now able to walk short distances without any aid, albeit a little wobbly. He smiled to Matt once more and walked to the playground.

Matt silently nodded his head. His decision was made. He would stay with this Kai boy until his parents came and picked him up. He studied the boy for a few seconds, taking in his whole appearance. His eyes went over his walker, then his clothes, his eyes, then finally his dark hair. 'I wonder if it's hard to walk with that thing.' The boy asked himself as his eyes glanced back done to the walking aid.
"Sora?" He asked again. "Yeah, I know her. We grew up near each other." He said in a quiet tone. Matt wasn't the one to be loud...unless it came to his music. But when talking he usually used a hushed tone, just loud enough to get his point across. "She's pretty cool." He said with a slight smile. Matt followed the other boy, keeping up his guard, not knowing if he was going to fall again. The boy ran a gloved hand through his hair. "Who else do you know here?"
