Why was she here?
Luisa had just put up her bags in her cabin where she would be staying for the next two weeks, and organized herself entirely. Now that she was done with that and didn't have anything else to distract her (because the large group of kids out playing in the central commons area wasn't distracting enough), she was back in self-pity mode. Her friends had all gone to a different summer camp, and now she was stuck here, alone. She had no idea who she was going to talk to or anything. There were a few other girls in her cabin, of course, but they all seemed like they were judging her, she could just feel it.
She was sitting on the front step, resting her chin on her hands and overall feeling very sorry for herself. And no one was going to like her. They all seemed nice themselves, but they didn't know her. How was she ever going to make any friends? She sighed heavily.

Well, this was just great! His parents had sent him to some summer camp when his aunt had said, “she couldn’t handle looking after him”. What rubbish! His older brother and younger sister had been allowed to stay there so he didn’t understand why he wasn’t allowed to. It was so unfair! Kai had two to three carers helping him at the camp, paid for by his parents. Luckily, they weren’t with him all the time. He supposed he’d go mad if they were. Currently the disabled boy was walking in his k-walker – which resembled a walking frame that the elderly use but went behind him and supported his waist. It was electric blue in colour with the hand areas being black.
Kai sighed as he watched the other kids playing. They ostracised him for being different from them. But why should they? Was he not a human being, just like them? Did he not deserve the same treatment as they? He ought to have. He was no different than they. It made him feel angry at being shunned by his peers. He kicked a pebble as he walked. He didn’t even have friends, as far as he knew, more like acquaintances. Kai knew he should be doing something but he didn’t know what to do. He’d just be shunned by the others, anyway. He looked up to see a girl sitting by herself, she looked sad. Maybe he could cheer her up. He walked over to her. “Hey, are….you alright?”

Luisa was still busy being sorry for herself when someone spoke up. And they were talking to her. She lifted her head off of her hands, and took in the boy in front of her. He was in a walker. That was odd. It wasn't a bad odd, really. It was just odd. She had never seen anyone that was this close to her age in a walker. But he looked familiar.
He was asking if she was okay. She needed to reply to that.
"Si, ah, I mean, yes. I'm fine. Thank you." Luisa replied awkwardly, first in Spanish, then in Japanese. It was difficult going between her three languages - Spanish being her first, English her second, and Japanese her second and a half, or third, if you wanted to be particular. She usually defaulted to Spanish when she was distracted or otherwise occupied mentally. Typically, however, she did love to practice her languages when she could. Now could be a good time to practice.
"Excuse me, but... Do I know you?" Luisa asked curiously. There. She was practicing, and asking a question she wanted to answer. But what if he thought she was crazy? Even if he didn't know her, she must look so stupid right now. She bit her lip. Great. Another fine, graceful move for Luisa Cervantes. Her family would be proud.

Matt was hanging out on his own, he had hoped to hang out with his younger brother but he seemed to prefer playing with kids his own age, fair enough. He regretted talking his parents into going to this summer camp, he had nothing to do here and not really anyone to talk to. He sat down in the grass, not too far away from a latina girl and a guy with a walker, he had seen the guy before around school and even talked a bit to him, but they didn’t know each other well.
He looked around, but didn’t see his brother. He pulled his harmonica out of his pocket, considering just getting away and make some music on his own, but he didn’t know where he could find anywhere to be alone since there were kids everywhere. He just studied the instrument for a while, admiring its simple beauty, music had to be one of his biggest passions.
He looked over at the guy with the walker, Kai he believed he was called. He remembered the one time they talked, Kai had dropped some books on the floor so Matt had hurried and picked them up as he wasn’t sure if Kai would be able to do that himself. He wondered how someone could deal with being disabled, he couldn’t imagine what it would be like.

Kai smiled when the girl said she was fine. She spoke Italian and Japanese – an impressive feat for one so young. He thought about if he’d seen her before. He might have, when he was younger. She stood out amongst the Japanese kids. Then he remembered where he had seen her. They’d met a few years ago, briefly. She was the same as she had been back then. He was glad to see her again. She’d seem nice enough back then, and he’d bonded with her. He looked around and saw kids laughing and playing with each other. They had pretty much made up their minds about him.
He heard a harmonica and looked to see a familiar person nearby: Matt Ishida. He smiled when he saw the blonde kid. He’d met the guy a few years ago, at school. He’d helped Kai with getting a book from the floor that he’d dropped. He couldn’t believe Matt was at the same summer camp as he was. He looked back to the girl and made a decision. She seemed lonely – maybe she could befriend Kai and Matt. They could use the friendship, he was sure.
“Yea, you do. We met a few years ago. Come on, I want you to meet someone,” said Kai who then ran to where Matt was. “Hey, Matt? It’s good to see you again!”

Luisa let out a sigh of relief. She wasn't crazy - they had met a long time ago. That didn't stop her from not knowing the disabled boy's name, which was embarrassing. She hated referring to him by his handicap, even if it was only inward. She had, of course, no intention of letting him know of his nickname. She meant no offense, but she assumed that offense would probably be taken regardless. Better to keep her mouth shut. It was a good thing she knew when to shut her boca and was rather good at it.
He moved to a blonde boy that he called Matt. He had said that he thought she should meet him, and so, despite her sudden nerves (which occurred whenever she met someone new), Luisa stepped forward quietly, staying behind the disabled boy.
"Ah, hola, er, hello, Matt." Again? Did she really just slip from Japanese to Spanish again? She was a shame upon her family's name. Why did she even bother trying to make new friends?
"I - I'm Luisa." She blurted out quickly, and looked down at the grass. She felt so stupid. Why did she even bother? No one would ever like her, so there was little point in introducing herself. Granted, that disabled boy seemed to like her. He seemed nice enough, but he was just one person... She sighed quietly and bit her lip. She wished, as she had many times before, that she could melt into the earth and never look up again. But she would have to eventually.

Matt didn't expect the two of them to come over to where he was. "Um, hey. What's up Kai?" He said, somewhat caught off guard. He slipped his harmonica back into his pocket. "Luisa."He repeated. "Nice to meet you, Matt Ishida." The boy gave a small smile. He hadn't seen this other boy in a while and couldn't really believe that he was actually remembering who he was. Sure, Matt remembered Kai...but that was only because he was "that disabled kid." Not that Matt called him such names, it was just what everyone else knew the other boy as.
"So what are you up to?" He asked the couple of kids. "Not getting into trouble huh?" He asked with a playful smirk. The boy tucked his hands into his pockets. Though he wouldn't admit it, he was a bit excited the two had come up to him. Most assumed him to be a loner, which for the most part he was. He liked his space and his quiet, but moments like these he was happy to have someone to talk to. The boy didn't have many friends, sure there was Tai and Sora...but still. He kept his distance from them. Some could argue that he was friends with his younger brother T.K. but that is more Matt being protective over his younger sibling than actual friendship. Maybe he really was just meant to be alone.
